I can't clearly read the first 2 didgits in the SN#. K It arrived today and i was hoping to submit b4 and after piks of this rare bike while i build it up again. You can see by the pictures that it is a schwinn gt discovery..like I said...cannot locate this bike online anywhere.
The problem is that it looks slighty different from the original catalog pik i have so im not sure of the year now.. Serial# is 2kbxm00238 â€¢ â€¢ I cant find this bike online anywhere. Perhaps there is another number that I overlooked somewhere else on the bike but I looked all over and believe this is the only number.
This confuses me though because the head badge days Chicago, but I thought I read somewhere that the Chicago factory was closed in 1982. Given all this information, can someone help me find out exactly the year the bike was made? The headbadge still read "Chicago" because Schwinn's corporate offices remained there.
Schwinn closed the Chicago plant in 1983 shortly after opening a plant in Greenville MS. The serial number SC5xxxxx indicates the frame was built in March (C) of '85 (5), and the 1025 headbadge number indicates the bike was built on the 102nd day of '85, or Friday April 12th, 1985:
The Paramount serial numbers (1970 - 1979)included a production month letter followed by twonumbers indicating production year (79 = 1970, etc.). WTB: Nothing, unless it's a real cheap local survivor score!
The sequence was changed in 1981 when facilities weremoved to Wisconsin, to include the letter "W" followedby a production month letter and several numbers, thefirst two signifying year of production (81 = 1981, etc.). Le Tour (and Super Le Tour)numbers (1978- on) include the letter "S"with year of production (8 = 1978, 0 = 1980). Sting 20" racing bikes have aproduction month letter "T" signifying that it is a tri-ovalframe (with three frame tube ends ovalized). Imported Schwinn serial sequences depend upon countryof origin. I'm still looking for a confirmation of this dating method. Remain calm and exercise extreme caution when encountering a bear.
The serial number will also indicate when it was made, which can help you estimate the value of the particular Schwinn bike.
If there is only one letter in the first twopositions, the first number or two numbers refer to productionyear.

I located the serial number: SC507898, but the two letters at the beginning don't match any date code listed on any of the sites the last serial numbers and how to decode them.
